I know a little something about this topic from a previous job.
I think an elephant might derail a train depending on speed.

Speed also determines the state of a human body after impact. They could be hit and remain mostly intact or they could shatter like glass into lots of pieces.

It happens more often than you think but especially around holidays. Also, people trying to run across tracks misjudge how fast the train is moving and get splattered.

One company I know of coaches engineers to close the shade on the window before impact with someone committing suicide. They can see the perosn well before hitting them but the train doesn't stop. That would be the hardest part for me; pulling the brake and waiting, knowing in a few seconds someone is going to die right in front of you and you can't do a thing to stop it. If you are an engineer you are guaranteed experience it.

For context, there's a boss in FF6 (FF3 SNES) called the phantom train, it escorts dead people to the other side (and kills living ones.. because it only takes dead ones with it).
