Creating a "persona" for a neutral product is an old marketing trick called "positioning". Cigarette advertising is a good example. Cigarettes are neutral and don't have any distinguishing characteristics that would make one brand more "masculine" or "feminine" than another, but everyone associates certain brands with imagery they learned from the advertising. Marlboro: masculine. Virginia Slims: feminine. Kool: niggers.
