Actually was a nickname for the /theDonald subscribers, and came from the mods of the subreddit shortly before they were booted. They created a r/Pedes on reddit, which was also booted, and similar subverses on other sites, before deciding on Voat.

Three years or so ago while exhausted on a long walk in a forest, I passed two 70-year-old-ish women talking about how they can no longer trust anything in the news anymore. I wanted to chime in, but I was sweating like a pig and so tired, and so I just smiled and kept on walking.
Old folks are slow to change, but it is wonderful when they do for the better.
Between the rhetoric at the start being favorable to Trump supporters in how they viewed themselves at the time and the music being applied to a number of "You can't stump the Trump" videos, it caught on.
E: I'm not sure if you remember, but Trump supporters would often refer to themselves as "nimble navigators," which is words used in the rhetorical start.
