Why use a VPN? So you can route all your internet traffic to a different company who can also be audited by the government?

The point would be to use a VPN not based within the authority of SIGINT Seniors Europe (SSEUR)group, and therefore under no obligation to play ball with Big Bro. Ideally one that also keeps no logs, or keeps minimal logs for short duration.

Hand's down: Mullvad.

Why? It's the only one I found which:
1) Still takes Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash with a -10% discount and has done so for over 5 years without fail
2) They also accept cash in the post via snailmail if you prefer that
3) They require no sign-up, no email, no name - you just click a button and it generates a random account for you. Meaning, you can have a new account each day, week, year, or for however long you pay
4) They actually fight for privacy: they constantly put out helpful tools built by them such as a DNS leak checker, a private DNS maintained by them, and other things
5) They are open source completely
6) They haven't changed pricing for as long as I've been using them - years and years

I'm in no way affiliated with them but I've tried so many others and I've always returned to Mullvad. I never left Mullvad though, that's the beauty of it - they don't force you into year long subscriptions with all kinds of shitty discounts.

They practice a flat rate no matter the time, and it's a very fair one, and instead they survive - and thrive - on building a really good product.

Speed is top notch. No disconnects. I can't recommend them enough.

Cheers for that. I am going to give that a go. Any product that doesn't force you into long contracts is confident in it's capacity to give you what you need

Options:

1. Purchase your own VPN

There is a VPN service you can buy where you control the VPN yourself. Video tutorial: https://www.yewtu.be/watch?v=gxpX_mubz2A

2. Don't use a VPN. Instead use Kali Linux and proxychains + tor + VMware. If you have a machine you can use linux as the host that is even better. But for learning purposes using VMWare will work great.

I made a tutorial here: https://www.talk.lol/viewpost?postid=614cb8d122354 Look in the comments for parts 1-3.

3. Use Linux and Whonix.

Whonix is easier to setup but requires more of your computers memory (if using VM's). If you use it correctly you need two computers (one is the gateway and the other is the workstation) but if you only have one computer you can run it in VMware or VirtualBox and run both VM's.

4. Use an encyrpted DNS. Simple DNSCrypt will do the job. Do not only use this. Use this along with one of the other options.

5. Use something like HTTPS Everywhere. Again: Use this along with one of the other options.

6. More linux: Tails

7: More Linux: Qubes

Loads of solid help here. Thanks

Mullvad does not ask for your email, phone, name, etc. ever. The only connection between you and them is a randomly-generated pseudocode. Haven't heard anything bad about it yet, but it could be because it's just small fry.

Definitely be wary of those that advertises heavily and seem mainstream.

Good advice. Voat is my first go to for all tech matters

[ - ] beece 3 points 3.7 yearsOct 2, 2021 11:11:49 ago (+3/-0)*

I saw that "Express VPN" along with a couple of other VPNs, which advertises on "right wing" news sites, was bought by the Mossad affiliated company Kape Technology. Same folks that bought Voat.co.

Choose carefully.

"Some of its recent purchases include Private Internet Access (PIA) which it bought in December 2019, GhostVPN, which it acquired in 2017, Zenmate in 2018, and Webselenese that it acquired around six months back."

PIA is Israeli owned. I use VYPRVPN.

What countries to avoid: https://restoreprivacy.com/5-eyes-9-eyes-14-eyes

Best privacy-focused VPNs, and why: https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/best/

There are also subsections like best for torrenting, best for absolute anonymity, etc. The first article on 5eyes from April lists expressvpn as an option, but the newest Top 10 from a couple days ago doesn't. Perfect Privacy has multi-hop and all is required is a throwaway e-mail and a Dollar General (or other) gift card. The payment options are region-specific, so if you use a crap free VPN to sign up a good one make sure your location is spoofed as your home country. IMO if anything is free, then the consumer is the product the company sells to make money.

[ - ] Flabbygasted 2 points 3.7 yearsOct 2, 2021 09:22:04 ago (+2/-0)

One that doesnt rely on government satellites?

[ - ] carrotcar 3 points 3.7 yearsOct 2, 2021 11:00:06 ago (+3/-0)

Most of the internet is routed through cables and not satellites.

Satellite internet has very high latency unless the orbit is very low.

Govts have control of all of the major hubs though, so you are correct in that point.

All of the above

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 3.7 yearsOct 2, 2021 12:39:39 ago (+1/-0)

setting up your own SSH tunnel between known hosts is good. I like not having some weird middleman I need to trust - but it's all a compromise, unless you have total end-to-end encryption.
