Or the light from the infrared sensor (which is much cheaper) was absorbed by the dark skin because more melanin= more gibs, some much more gibsme that the light is absorbed and not reflected.

Could also be a capacitive proximity sensor that didn’t have enough time to reestablish the field. I’m not fond of my second theory, it usually takes less than a second to generate the sensory field.
