I am suddenly interested in watches. Not super expensive watches, just feature-rich, fairly affordable watches. Do you have any favorites or personal preferences you'd like to share with the class?

Not sure how this happened exactly, but ever since I started wearing a wedding ring, I've been looking at watches. Maybe I'm just tired of pulling out my phone to check the time or date. The less I depend on my phone, the better.

I just ordered a Seiko Flightmaster, because it looks like a fun intricate tool/toy with lots of probably unecessary functionality, and it was very well reviewed. I also ordered a couple different bands to try out. I'm still window shopping online though, learning about what else is out there, and am interested in what you faggots may like or look for in a watch. I've been mostly focused on analog chronographs. I have absolutely zero interest in "smart" watches.

Watches are basically jewelry for the women and a talking point with other men.

In other words, they need to look in a manner you wish to portray yourself to women - glitz and diamonds flashy? Matte silver manly functional? Mickey Mouse to show your light hearted side? Gold austere and wealth? What do you want women to see?

From the other side, men will chat about watches just to shoot the shit, because weather is boring AF. Features like you mnetioned, cool design items, etc. Anything to make it stand out so you and another bloke can break the ice of awkward silence at a work or social gathering your boss or wife forced you to go to.

Personally, I like these watches by Original Grain. They feature wood grain designs on the faces, and the bands generally are striking. For example, I have a beer barrel faced watch with a faux wood and silver band. Another is a Mahogany faced watch with red and black band. I bought my brother an all wood watch for his 50th, and had it engraved with his initials and birthdate. Wood band, wood backing, wood face, just the glass and the mechanisms were not wood. Just to be different.

Those are pretty cool looking. Not sure about the durability of a wooden watch, but the asthetic of it is nice.

For women, watches are indeed almost always jewelry. For me though a watch is a tool. I've owned several different watches over the years, and, while the style and look of the watch does matter some, it's usefulness has by far always been the priority. The more visibly apparent the utility though, the better it looks imo.

Have you seen the ones made from Taylor acoustic guitars? They're pretty sweet.

Those are nice. I was looking at the Grillmaster ones, too, recently.

I'll check them out. Haven't seen them.

Off topic, but you might want to go view some watch cleaning and repair videos. I don't care about watches personally, but I really enjoyed some of those restoration videos. The level of precision from watches made before the Industrial Revolution amazes me.

Already falling deep down that rabbit hole, and just received my first little repair/maintenance tool kit in the mail.

I'm into watches. Around the price range as the flight master the casio protreks are nice. I'm also into vintage watches. Dress watches like the Hamilton Thinline series for example or the Gruen Curvex. But there are tons of cool watches. Its quite the rabbit hole. Check out the goodwill site, or local antique shops for interesting stuff, oh and estate sales.

That Hamilton is classy. A little too simply featured for my tastes, but definitely classy. I'm considering simple, slim watches like this though, for those times I have to put on a suit and don't want anythong bulky jamming up the cuff on my sleeve. I used to wear a really slim Seiko chronograph, but the battery has long since died, and I can't find the extra links for the band.. and my wrists are a bit bigger than they were when I was 18.

Now that I have a little tool kit for watch repair, finding used vintage models and sprucing them up sounds like a fun way to explore the world of watches. I like old mechanical technology, dissecting it, repairing it, using it. I think this is partially why this has become so appealing to me recently.

Edit: just looked at the Guren. Very cool. So, it has a curved movement? I've heard about curved movements, quite the feat of engineering.

Its kind of like finding treasure. Best of luck in your hunt for your next great watch. (And there will always be another to hunt for)

Get watches with a sapphire crystal face. Everything else scratches to hell. Victorinox makes really affordable ones and they have tons of different styles and options.

Nomos and grand seiko.

When batteries become unavailable under the centralized socialist distribution system guaranteed to fail.....

[ - ] Spaceman84 2 points 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 19:06:21 ago (+2/-0)

Real watches don't use a battery.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 1 point 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 19:23:50 ago (+1/-0)

Based and sundialpilled.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 20:52:58 ago (+0/-0)

how do you feel about solar capacitors?

[ - ] Spaceman84 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 12, 2021 02:32:10 ago (+0/-0)

Purely mechanical is preferable. Wind it, it works. No need for electronics.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 18:33:51 ago (+0/-0)

I've started looking into automatics and solar powered analogs. So many to choose from...

I'm often in the woods for work and when there are clouds, I need to find North using a compass.
I bought a Luminox Bear Grylls edition that has a dedicated, detachable compass, chronograph, and this thing that tells time.

It's not as bulky as a Gshock, but is still an "active" looking watch.

The strap also has a ruler, a scale (1:100 & 1:200) for maps, and Morse Code built right in.

For work, all of these are useful except the Morse Code, but the first day I got the watch I was winding through am radio stations when I heard "beeeeeep beep beeeeeep beeeeeep beep beep". I actually decoded some random Morse code the first fucking day. It was an abbreviation of the county I live in.

Luminox and Victorinox make nice watches.

Well, fuck that. I still recommend:

Nope.

Seiko Astron, select Seiko Prospex PADI (Scuba and Spearo), Grand Seiko.

Take a careful look at the mechanism, not all watches are built the same.

Stay clear of all those shitty casio, tag heuer, rolex, g-shock, they are kids toys and are not accurate. They can lose several minutes per year and are mostly plastic and cheap glass, no shielding and mechanisms from the 1930s.

I am a sucker for anything Skeleton with exposed Tourbillon. Moon phase, mechanical.

How about something a little non-traditional? I heard you were non-binary, so maybe this would be what you are looking for.

If by non-binary, you mean third position...

And no, that pile of shit is a pile of shit.

The bezel can be used as a slide rule for making calculations, but also as a unit conversion tool. Look closely around the whole bezel, you'll see other units marked off. I'm not totally clear yet on how to perform the conversions, but I'm looking forward to learning. I see this watch as a partial calculator substitute, that isn't battery dependent, thus eliminating yet another reason to look at my phone.

It probably won't break but it may get scratched to shit and you're probably not going to wear it after that.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 18:44:51 ago (+0/-0)

The fuck if I know. I think the bigger issue here though is, why are you eating shit? Disgusting.

I love watches. Casio’s are my favorite. There are a million models from $10 and up. My daily’s are the 10 yr battery watches, and I have a few gshocks as well for shits and giggles. But nothing on earth is cooler than the vintage data bank watches. Skagens are pretty nice if you want a classier watch. And of course every Gentleman needs a silver pocket-watch.

Edit: I actually use my daily watches for inspection purposes and what not.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 1 point 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 18:30:35 ago (+1/-0)

I carried a pocket watch when I was a kid. Loved it.

What do you mean by "inspections"?

[ - ] Thyhorrorcosmic103 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 12, 2021 12:03:06 ago (+0/-0)

I am a CWI, so I inspect welds and do NDE (non-destructive examinations)as well which requires timed inspections and its easier to just look at a watch instead of whipping out a phone and setting a timer, especially if I am multitasking those examinations. Thats why I like some of the cheaper casios as I don’t have to worry about them taking damage.

In that price range Invicta makes some interesting designs. Bulova makes quality pieces for a bit more.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 20:51:13 ago (+0/-0)

get a GWM5610 variant and its the only watch you'll ever need. it is always on time from atomic clock and it has solar so it never runs out of battery and it has timer and world time and etc

i sold all my watches after I got it

[ - ] PurpleDrank 0 points 3.6 yearsNov 11, 2021 21:12:43 ago (+0/-0)

I did exactly the same thing. Went through tons of different micros, boutiques, and luxury watches over the years but could never fully scratch the itch. The 5610 is light, keeps perfect time, and is built like a tank.

I’ve been wanting an Omega Speedmaster since forever. Their “Dark Side of the Moon” is just stunning to me. Of course being Omega, they aren’t exactly cheap.
