Nathan Sutherland, a former nurse at Hacienda Healthcare in Phoenix, Arizona, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison

The former nurse raped and impregnated a 29-year-old woman in a vegetative state in 2018

His abuse was discovered in December 2018 after another nurse noticed the woman was going through labor and later birthed a baby boy

If you're looking for an actual answer it's because juries (and often judges) are idiots and can't be trusted with that kind of irreversible decision. They're already instructed only to convict if they have no reason to doubt the accusation, but they put innocent people away all the time. Either through gullibility, incompetence or malice.
