It's synapses, and how quickly you can form new connections or access the ones you made yesterday or twenty years ago. As you get older the new connections don't leave a crumb trail as as easy to locate as the ones you made years ago.

Mental exercises can make new connections easy. Learn Morse code if you're over 40.
