Just saw that the other day! I had no idea they even existed. VinWiki is a great channel - most of those guys are fantastic storytellers. Chris Michaels, Rabbit and Travis are a hoot.

I dont think we are ever going to see turbine cars now. big no no. because you can run them on anything that combusts like used cooking oil. which means big oil doesnt get their cut. which means big power doesnt get their cut from electric cars, because no one whos not retarded buys that shit unless theyre forced to or its cheap.

You know of any car engineers who are attempting to install turbine engines into cars?

Turbines are too expensive.

They are hard to manufacture. That may be the down side. But with automation and CNC, it may be much easier.

They are powerful, but with more air you need more fuel. The fuel range might not be as good as a standard diesel piston engine. That's probably why trains and boats still use piston diesel engines.

You can't CNC a turbine blade

Edit: It might be easier to 3D print a blade these days.

That's a compressor blade, a jet engine has both, manufacturing the critical parts requires millions of dollars in specialized equipment and expertise.

Jet engines are a lot more complex than piston engines and every part is made of very high purity metals, exotic alloys or both.

Don't you also have to start one using a regular motor? I know that they have electric ones, but they may not be battery powered, and that's a sight more than most auto mfrs want to incorporate into a road car.

You have to get the turbine spinning fast enough to suck in air and then inject fuel to ignite it.

For an automobile, an electric starter would likely be better. I wonder if the Chrysler jet car just did that, a normal electric starter.

Most planes can spin their turbine engines using air starters https://infogalactic.com/info/Air-start_system You might see this at the airport when they have hoses connected to the engines.

The noise is and will always be a major issue.

$10k for an engine that runs on turds? meh.

That was memory holed very well. First time I've ever heard of this.

I've heard this story many times. It's not a conspiracy; it just isn't a practical idea.

It says in the video it wasn't viable, a V8 was a couple hundred bucks while the turbine cost $10k.

Wankel engines had a lot of issues and it was killed because Mazda couldn't keep up with emission standards.

if you don't treat it like a piston engine it lasts more than 100k

Using 2 cycle oil in the fuel tank. They call it premixing.

[ - ] mikenigger 0 points 3.3 yearsJan 17, 2022 22:38:25 ago (+0/-0)

rotary's are more sensitive to cold revving, carbon buildup and not sticking to the service schedule

[ - ] Spaceman84 0 points 3.3 yearsJan 17, 2022 21:12:34 ago (+0/-0)

And there are piston engines that run 300k miles or more. 200k isn't even that impressive.

Yeah, you can't even make 12 MPG piston engines these days. The government really does not like fun.
