This is the reason why intellectuals kept writing about the dystopian future where slavery will be back again. Slavery is a natural phenomenon, and it can happen any time, because the majority won't complain.
Every major culture on Earth has practiced slavery in one form or another. The Brazilians didn't ban slavery until 1890, slavery is still practiced today among Muslims in Africa and the Middle East.
