Roman naming conventions were such that a momentous military victory would culminate in the usage of the locale of the said victory to refer to the person who achieved the victory there. There are many other examples of agnomens being granted to Roman generals in a similar fashion:

Lucius Aemilius Paulus Macedonicus

Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus (although he was stripped of his command by Gaius Marius in an underhanded political move)

Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus (the younger brother of Scipio Africanus that defeated Antiochis at the battle of Magnesia in Asia Minor)

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (his Germanicus agnomen was posthumous)

and there are many more.
