Same. I always leave the room when I get a call, not so much for privacy (although that's one reason) but more for consideration of other people. Being in the same room with someone on a phone call is irritating as hell, and people at a table talking on a phone are the worst people on earth.

if I had to make or take a call I would walk to a payphone and use it there.

I recall needing to use a public payphone at a train station one time many moons ago before mobile phones. Some curry was talking to another curry on the public phone for over 30min, eventually, I just choked him out with the cord and called a taxi after hanging up his call and he was licking the tiles at my boots.

Public payphones would necessitate some sense of decorum and common courtesy, you would take a shit in a public restroom for 30min now would you?

This is so true. I had a similar experience, and I recall some thot in college asking me if I lived under a rock one day because I didn't have my phone out checking facebook in the dorms when everyone else was. I remember the transition from cell phones to smart phones, and suddenly some of my friends became so fanatical about the 'tech'. They started trading in the vocab about the phones like it was just ordinary conversation, and I found myself so unable to care. They'd talk about the latest thing, standing for hours to get it, what the announcements were about the next version/s, etc.

That was a realization, and my most recent one has been seeing how people are living in a digital reality even prior to the physical reality they occupy. Women stopping dead in the middle of a store, or on a sidewalk, to do some stupid shit for social media, completely oblivious to everything and everyone around them. Also, the way that it is now considered more normal to be focused on a phone in public than to look at or start a conversation with strangers. People legitimately get insecure about the 'risks' socially of being social, and it is totally acceptable as a response - if you want to - to treat someone as weird if they break that unwritten rule. I mean, that it is a socially acceptable 'out' to punish someone for breaking that wall, if you don't want their conversation. As opposed to being the other way around, where we treat someone as weird for being totally shut off to socializing. The abnormal has become the normal.

When you go out with a group just have everyone pile their phones up in the middle of the table, if anyone goes and grabs their phone they have to pay the bill. If everyone abstains from grabbing for their phones then when the waitress comes with the bill tell her what the deal is and let her decide who pays by picking a phone.
