If everyone bought an electric car it would blow up the grid.

Don't worry, there's not enough lithium in the planet's crust to make enough batteries for that. Not exaggerating. It's just not there.

There's enough on the planet, technically, but most of it is dissolved in the oceans, with no effective way to get it out.

Replacing all conventional cars with EVs is a pipe dream. Batteries will become prohibitively expensive as they attempt to chase it.

Yeah I know. Electric cars a pipe dream. Even if the country replaced 10% gas cars with electric cars would crash the grid. We don’t have the infrastructure to support it. Hell in Texas we all about died last year when the weather got a little cold for a week.

Irony being it could have been clean nuclear power but the same types killed that option in the 70s.

Some probably do. Others are well aware of e.g., the "duck curve" and it's implications.

To me, the perspective from which alternative fuels make the most sense is when considering energy security. Flexible infrastructures are resilient infrastructures. If our transportation were to rely on e.g., 25% petroleum, 25% fission/electrolysis -based hydrogen, 25% coal-powered electric and 25% biomass we'd care a lot less about whatever OPEC is up to on any given day. Granted, there are other paths to deleveraging them but, at least when it comes to physical asset, diversification is a useful concept.

[ - ] Prairie 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 15:14:31 ago (+0/-0)

Interesting, that's a lot like diversifying assets. Here it's physical liabilities.

Do people who jerk off over electric cars really think?

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 20:52:32 ago (+1/-0)

People who buy electric cars do not use logic, reasoning, or critical thinking. Therefore, they are not good at math. Their decisions are overwhelmingly based on emotions and social acceptance.

[ - ] Deadcommiesmakemehard 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 20:17:24 ago (+0/-0)

Biggest challenge people are willfully ignoring is what called the “last mile” of the electrical grid. In nearly every place it couldn’t handle the load of having a block full of EV cars on charge.

Look forward to the new world of rolling blackouts

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 19:36:59 ago (+0/-0)

It will take a lot of natural gas to power all these electric cars

If they were true thinkers, they wouldn't buy an electric car. You are giving them way too much credit.

The cost won't go up, there will be brownouts.

[ - ] SithEmpire 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:45:02 ago (+0/-0)

The off-jerkers aren't thinking about the cost, it's more a combination of climate cuckoldry and gadget consoom.

The ones who also require everyone else to switch to coal power do so because they are faggots who need their purchase validated by others, again without considering that they are increasing their own contention of the power network.

[ - ] CPU 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:24:51 ago (+0/-0)

People don't seem to make the connection with the new smart grid they are putting in, they want to control every single charger.

$8.00 - Price to drive my brothers EV (Chevy Bolt) to get to old home and back: total

$27.95. Price to drive My car, a Corolla Hybrid, which would get 65 MPG on this trip.

$112.50 Price to drive Wifes Jeep. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt, she wouldn't do this well. Based on $4.50 gallon gas vs price of electricity here. I change my own oil, but it's some rude shit that isn't ever on sale, 0-16, so costly. If I were to take it in, the price for an oil change is $110 at the dealer every 5000 miles. My brother doesn't have any oil to change, and a bunch of other horseshit that gas engines do.
So do the math but first grab some kleenex brother.

So what was the question again? Oh, if my brother will be paying more as people adopt electric cars. Right now, there are free chargers all over around here. I might even go down in price if he plugs it in while shopping. Better forget that flimsy kleenex and go straight for a paper towel....Brawney or better.

And in ten years when you need a new battery for almost the cost of a new vehicle, the conventional motor will still be running fine

The cost per kwh of electricity now is not the prompt. yes, now, today it's much more cost effective to drive a 60,000 car to save marginal cost of m.p.g. over the decade.

EV is a luxury product for rich people.

[ - ] CPU 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:24:11 ago (+0/-0)

Gas used to be cheap, now it is expensive due to (((reasons))).

EVs are now cheap because they want the masses to transfer, it will become expensive due to (((reasons))).

[ - ] diggernicks 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:29:00 ago (+0/-0)

You forgot to include the price to change out the battery on the ev when it wont charge anymore you fucktard

[ - ] pshawman 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 19:10:46 ago (+0/-0)

Not buying these figures for a second. What you pay for electricity there? How far is this round trip?

[ - ] VaccineWaters 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 11:51:34 ago (+0/-0)

No fluids like antifreeze or oil to maintain... Do electric cars use power steering fluid or brake fluid?

[ - ] mikenigger 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 12:00:35 ago (+1/-0)

Tesla's have an electric steering rack, I believe most cars do.

Brakes are the same as with any other car but there's also regen braking which reduces wear.

[ - ] VaccineWaters 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 13:08:13 ago (+0/-0)

Interesting

[ - ] CPU 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:28:45 ago (+1/-0)

Brake fluid needs to be change by time, as it absorbs moisture in the air. Most of the time it's 2-3 years regardless of how you use it.

Also the fact that EVs have regen braking may actually cause the brake caliper sliding pins to stick if you don't use it enough.

There is also a transfer case, a drop gear, that needs lubrication and fluid change every so often. Maybe like 50k miles. They are also heavy cars, so more tire wear on passenger car tread.

[ - ] CPU 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 19, 2022 01:54:23 ago (+0/-0)

I should add EVs like the model 3 have coolant for the batteries, to keep them warm and cool in the summer. So they can sometimes have a water pump to pump the coolant.

[ - ] StealthNinjaTaliban 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:11:09 ago (+0/-0)

am i the only one that's never touched a single fluid in the car? I've never once in 100,000 miles have a mechanic tell me that i need new fluids.

exception: oil changes. $23 every 3000 miles.

[ - ] CPU 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:30:09 ago (+0/-0)

You should be changing all fluids, especially transmission and differential fluid. At 100k, look into changing anti-freeze as it will become acidic and lose it's anti-corrosion properties over time.
