Both are important roles to practice. I kind of like that cats aren't dependent on the owner, therefore you have to earn their friendliness.

The purpose of cats is to break the monotony of selfishness, and remind you that it's okay to put another ahead of yourself. Dogs accomplish much the same, but in a different (high maintenance) sort of way.
