Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions on what motherboard and cpu combo I should get to upgrade my system. I already have an RTX 3060 that I'll be using. I'm leaning toward intel but would consider AMD. Latest generation preferably unless you can make an argument for older.
AMD is newer, better process, costs less, more overall performance (especially that L3 cache), lower price - bonus, less built-in Government spyware (Intel predominately packages this into their on-chip GPU die, the 5800x does not have one). Intel is reserving their 10 & 7 nm processes for things like ASIC's and Enterprise server CPU's. AMD spreads the love to PC gamers still.
Only real world advantage to Intel is (slightly) less overall power consumption. You be the judge.
I was actually referring to the Ryzen 9 5900x. Would the Ryzen 7 5800x be better then the Ryzen 9 5900x for gaming? I am fairly new at PC gaming so this is a sincere question.
Very few games will take advantage of 8 cores, let alone 12 or 16 cores. You're paying a premium for hardware overhead that is idle 99% or more of the time. Purely an economic choice at that point.
I have 5800x, 5900x, & 5950x dedicated gaming systems.
The 5800x is the most powerful gaming PC of the entire lot, on average - because it overclocks better, and can sit at 5.5GHz base all day long.
I use the 5900x for things that actually take advantage of the larger core count (about 2-3% of games, really, so very infrequently), and the 5950x is just used for 3d modeling, CAD, & graphic design.
5800x: 8 core, 3.4GHz base (4.7GHz burst) 5900x: 12 core, 3.7GHZ base (4.8GHz burst) 5950x: 16 core, 3.4GHz base (4.9GHz burst)
Reality is nothing is wrong with the 5900x, other than the fact that most of the time you'll be using more cores than you need, so you over-spent for that idle time.
Go for the 5700x instead, it's typically a lot cheaper and performs practically the same as the 5800x. Now if you're willing to pay a lot more, you can pick up the 5800x3d which just came out on our Fuhrer's birthday and it is the fastest AMD gaming CPU.
As for motherboards, you may want to refer to online reviews. I think a b550 class motherboard will be fine, but if you want something more high end an x570 one is what you're looking for.
Very few games will take advantage of 8 cores, let alone 12 or 16 cores.
That is true, although games are getting better at it out of necessity. If you play strategy games it's definitely non-zero the games that will take advantage of many cores, although the work they do tends to be super wasteful in the first place.
I agree only with the -modern- caveat. I travel a LOT for work and am gone frome home most of the time. At home I have a huge collection of retro games and a couple gaming PCs, yet rarely touch them there.
I travel with a laptop and a MiSTer and occassionally play games to pass time. There are a handful of modern titles up to ~2017 that aren't full on globohomo.
I'm also looking for a replacement motherboard to fit an AMD Ryzen 7 2700x. For whatever reason the one I have doesn't do Linux NVME raids in the firmware.
From what I've learned it's something to do with the AM4 chipset being farmed out to another company that didn't, and won't, include such functionality.
Higher single core clock speed + L3 cache + overclocking overhead are the core competencies in a gaming PC.
Intel is unilaterally smashed by AMD in all regards, pound for pound, with every generation - with the sole exception of power usage (TDP).
Even if AMD wasn't superior in almost all functional gaming capacities vs. Intel, I'd still pick AMD simply because I'm paying for less Government embedded backdoors.

The discussion on more cores vs faster processor here are worth paying attention to.
For gaming you usually just want the fastest processor and memory, with the extra cores not be utilized by most games.
