"Indeed, some people, such as the residents of California – who, like the peoples of many arid zones around the world, have suffered a series of droughts over recent years – are now even being paid to rip out their lawns. They get up to $2 (£1.53) for each square foot of turf grass that they remove, with the state also offering subsidies to those who have artificial grass installed.".

A couple of years ago there were some towns that were giving out fines to people that took out the lawns in front of their house to grow veggies.

Many chinks round here have artificial lawns (such as they are, gardens round here are fast becoming extinct in favour of high rise dog box apartments).

They're trashy and look awful after a year or so. Just more degradation of beauty and tranquillity.
