“It is estimated that a little over 3,800 turbines would be needed to power a city the size of New York... That's 304,000 gallons of refined oil for just one city.” Oil coated green!
What's funny is that in the dreamland of modern energy solutions, there will be a reduction in the demand for oil that will result from shifting methods of satisfying energy needs towards electrical generation, which will be predominatey coal powered. The resulting decline in demand for oil will be accompanied by a decline in supply that will cause an increase in costs for everything that still relies on petroleum based products. So everything will become more expensive in the short term. Not sure about the long term. Obviously people will find work-arounds.
"Synthetic" oil is a petroleum based product. I don't know who is making plant based oils and actually successfully using them. To use those plant based oils you have to change the oil very frequently. This is something that would make operating a wind turbine too costly.

And 304,000 gallons is the same as an oil change for 250,000 cars.
