The bureaucracy that exists in the UK is astonishingly idiotic. Police must have been too busy harassing people for stating medical facts about troons online, and had to ignore those 89 calls from residents about an intense odor of death emanating from the woman's apartment. Meanwhile, this woman had not paid rent in a full two years. Apparently that's how it works in England. She just stopped paying, and they never even tried to come talk to her. The landlord applied for government credit in her name and kept lining his pockets. Did the tenant not have to sign a form for such a process to be initiated?
You hear about these "urban mummy" tales in America too, but this one out of the UK is a little different. Sheila's death was of no surprise to anyone who lived in smell distance of her place. The neighbors had been trying to convince any official they could that she had most likely died. This is less a tale of societal detachment and more one of how dystopian their government is.
This is called "lonely death" and is becoming a huge issue in Japan. It usually happens to the elderly. They live isolated lives. No relatives, or they've lost contact, they die alone and no one knows. They decompose in their homes for weeks, sometimes months or years. This sort of thing is going to become increasingly common in the West. Seems East Asia is usually ahead of the curve with this stuff. Grass eating men, the lie flat movement, among others. Now this.
