I’ve been making games for 30 years. Three times now, Congress has dragged game executives before them to try and lay societies ills upon them, like they did with movies and comics, then TV and music. They always implement a grading system so it looks like they’re ‘helping’.
In the 90’s, I worked on a gruesome game. Each character had three deaths, generic kill, headshot, and torso cored out. Our publisher thought this game was going to be such a huge seller, they gave us a bigger cartridge on their dime. Suddenly, I had to animate an additionally 6 deaths per character. That was about 80 unique kills. I had to carry a little scratch pad around with me to jot down kill ideas. All I thought about for 5 months was death, that was my job. Just before our game came out, another companies game; ‘Soldier of Fortune’ was getting banned in Canada and Germany…their sales went thru the fucking roof.
Our CEO got called before Congress for a C-Span event, along with other game companies execs. They hammered him for our game violence, even though it wasn’t people we were killing, it was aliens. The entire studio was watching live, we cheered and danced everytime Lieberman mentioned our game title.
With my first royalty check, I bought a house. With the second, I bought Porsche 993. Thank you, Congress. Every-time the elites try to lay societies violence on games, we make bank.
That said, I’ve quit companies that tried to inject fag/lesbian/tranny and interracial bullshit into the games. They always wait till just before shipping to slip in the deviance. Fuck you EA.
Back in the days of the cartridge, once it shipped that was it. You never had to think about it again. There was no way to fix anything. We were pencils down, no new content about 3 months from shipping. Zero bugs was the goal.
Now days they ship half baked buggy shit with the intent of fixing it later with DLC’s. I never buy a game till it’s been out for a year.
The biggest boner I have ever worked on was a football game in the Super Nintendo days. If you played as a certain team and made it to the super bowl, it wouldn’t let you play. That was embarrassing. I blame the English programmers. Back then, there was no QA. The dev team QA’d ourselves. Eventually the industry decided that it was a waste of money for the talent to do QA, thus QA was born. Grade F, D, and some of C get fixed. B and A are ignored. They should all get fixed.
