It only took me 10 years to fix

submitted by AugustineOfHippo2 to TellUpgoat 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 12:11:17 ago (+50/-1)     (TellUpgoat)

So our sliding screen door to the deck never really worked right. When we first moved in, I looked at it and didn't find what the issue was. Since then, we just didn't really use it but left it open. Mostly during summer we have the A/C on, so we didnt really have a need.
Yesterday, I got a bee in my bonnet to get this thing fixed. Pulled it off, and noticed two little capped holes on the bottom. Pull off the caps and realize there are set screws there to adjust the height of the rollers! Who knew? Put some dry lube everywhere, put the door back on and adjusted the screws to put the rollers to a reasonable height. Lo and behold it works almost as new.
I was ecstatic, wife just shrugged.

Our sliding screen door had nylon rollers that would break in parts causing the door to go off its tracks often. When I went to order replacements I discovered they made brass rollers. Door slides like a dream now and the brass won't break like nylon.

When I build/repair stuff I always try to use the finest materials/components. Sometimes it seems everyone else is the complete opposite. It didn't used to be like this, stuff made 80 years ago was robust. Now they want it to break down quickly so you consume more product.

Chinese shit is always made with the cheapest possible shit they can use. That's why 400 dollar American made doors and windows are worth it. Will last over 100 years.

Planned obsolescence.

Yep fcks me off. Use to by 99c light bulbs pre holo-cov that would last years, now most store only stock faggot energy savers at $4 or 5 a bulb for the cheapest with the wanky halogen energy savers go for anywhere from $9 up to about $18 a fcking bulb, but they all blow much quicker (months not years).
I want muh 99c bulbs back mthrfckers.

[ - ] AryanPrime 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 21:19:30 ago (+1/-0)

they can actually make lightbulbs that will never ever burn out you know

Literally last hundreds of years...

[ - ] dassar 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 21:53:31 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah i know. Even 10 000- 25 000 hrs are no problem to manufacture, evidently back in the day the major light bulb manufacturers all got together and set a (minimum standard of like 1000 or 2000 hrs ) to basically ensure that their product would continue to make sales - where's the profit if a household only has to buy a dozen bulbs forever ?? Planned obeisance.

Wife just shrugs the. Later tells her friends in front of you that you are “not very handy”.

yeah, it is a hubris thing from living in an anti-meritocracy society.

can change a head gasket, am not trusted to add washer fluid (or whatever low level task), but the "professional" 20 year old at autozone can do it no problem.

Ain't that the truth!
"Oh no. Don't change the oil yourself. I'm going to take it to the kwiky lube and get the highschool drop outs to do it. They know how to do it Right!"

You fix that by slapping the shit out of her in front of everyone. She'll never do that shit again.

[ - ] boxslowly 6 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 13:36:11 ago (+6/-0)

I love moving into a new place and thinking about all the things I'm going to improve, it's way better than the later realization that I've fixed very few things.

[ - ] dassar 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 21:56:49 ago (+1/-0)

Haha, feels good man.

Women have no respect for the accomplishments of others. If she had fixed it, you would have had to hear the whole story and every thought that went through her head in the process. Congratulations though bud. It feels great fixing something, especially fixing something that you had already resigned to never being able to be fixed.

What op did is something that would have taken his wife at least a few days of full time work. If she was handy and could do it in less than a day (8 hours) then she wouldn't have blown him off like that.

Wait until your dog runs through it, and it'll end up in the dump.

[ - ] binrobinrro 0 points 2.8 yearsSep 2, 2022 22:34:20 ago (+0/-0)

Our dump doesn't accept dogs.

[ - ] kammmmak 2 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:56:31 ago (+2/-0)

You had to be doing the dishes same time then she'd have been impressed.

[ - ] Youdgetfuckedfaggot 2 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 13:58:12 ago (+2/-0)

Yea. Faggots just adapt and accept shit doesn't work.

It's quite pathetic.. so much could be improved.. if people were worth the effort

Like removing jews and niggers from society. We could get it done.

Fixed my patio door with one of these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-1-4-in-x-8-ft-Stainless-Steel-Sliding-Door-Repair-Cap-D-1579-1/202723305

It was like a miracle, my sliding glass door opens smoothly now.

Edit sorry about the click fest you may have to go through to see what my miracle was…

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 12:38:53 ago (+1/-0)

I gotta get ours replaced completely. Nothing I have tried has made much of a difference. Some previous owner fucked them all up.

I got a new screen door made for the sliding glass door in the dining room, but it still can't latch, and it never fits exactly right, regardless of adjustment.

[ - ] cyclops1771 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 13:09:55 ago (+1/-0)

I got one of those roll-in ones, that slide over and latch on the jamb, and then retracts into a roller on the other side. Sort of like an retractable awnings, but side to side rather than down and out.

You can have it if you want it.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 13:18:51 ago (+1/-0)

I saw an ad for those.

The rails for ours are just all wonky and murdalized, from 50 years of retard previous owners stomping on them and grinding off latch parts and stuff.

But yeah, lacking latches whatsoever on the jambs kind of make those roll out ones unfeasible for this purpose until I get all that stuff replaced, and why not have custom new doors made specifically to fit the new rails and be shiny and nice looking at the same time! Stupid jambs.

[ - ] cyclops1771 2 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:20:44 ago (+2/-0)

It's a magnetic latch, so could be a nice stop gap, nigger rigged solution.

Why would your wife be ecstatic for you doing basic shit a husband should be doing?

Now someone will come along and whip it open real fast and hard and break it.
Then you'll realize that if you had fixed it years ago it would have already been broken by now and you would have had to buy a replacement or two! LOL!

Just joshing. Good job. Way to stay on top of the work around the house!
Ten years. At least you finally got to it.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 0 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 17:26:30 ago (+0/-0)

wife just shrugged.

Who cares what that bitch thinks? She should be too busy cooking, cleaning and producing babies to worry about anything.

Just shrugged? Really? BITCH, THE SCREEN DOOR WORKS NOW.

[ - ] Gowithit 1 point 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 18:11:31 ago (+1/-0)*

Maybe shrugging is the best she could do at the moment instead of immediately grabbing the phone to call anybody to yell all over the house how after 10 years the door is now fixed. And why did it take 10 years? omg all this time the screen doors could have worked.

I think his wife did the best she could.
She took the high road.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 0 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 20:07:22 ago (+0/-0)

Typical, of course you would say that. The Matriarchy moves in unison to crush a man's soul.

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 21:40:57 ago (+0/-0)

I applaud her. She's a lady if anything..

I would've broken the door myself at least two years into it being broken trying to fix it myself.

The mess I made trying to recaulk the shower once. Because I waited.. then figured hell... My mistake was thinking that I could scrape off the excess easier after it dried.

I was so wrong. And instead of helping me fix it he didn't. Then I had to live with a jacked up shower for awhile.

She has the patience of a saint.

Whatever with that "crushing a soul" phht

DOWN WITH MATRIARCHAL SHITLORDS! and the oppression of men! We will rise up.

Dude, thanks for posting this! I have the same problem with my downstairs porch door. Mine's so bad that it's visually canted and doesn't reach the latch. I alway just locked it with a dowel. was about to just buy a new one.

[ - ] gimpyoldman 0 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 12:35:09 ago (+0/-0)

I bought an old house 2 years ago, same problem but also the glass portion, too. The rollers are replaceable. Had to take the old ones off and take one to HomeD to make sure I got the right one (their are dozens of styles).

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 12:20:59 ago (+0/-0)

Wuaranteed window fixers took 4 visits to fix it.
