Depends what you throw them into, my wood furnace takes logs up to 12" in diameter, I don't split anything smaller than that. Round logs are great for slow burning.

Around 20 years ago I saw a movie about the early 20th century, where they had some machine (based on steam, I think) that would put iron bars (don't remember exactly) into the ground and they had a competition with the "strongest" guy around or so, who would use a hammer.

Yeah, that log splitter is just a simple machine to allow old/crippled/weak men, or women, to split a good number of logs. It isn't designed for efficiency, speed, or anything else than being cheap power on demand.

Edit: in fact, it's slowness is a design feature, allowing for said folks to have time to maneuver a chunk of wood into the proper place.
