It's not like men nowadays are set to "normal" and the rush is "extra", it is more that unless they exercise strenuously and often, they are set to 25% below "normal" and the lack of being at "standard" makes them feel empty and inadequate, as in less of an adequate person. Substituting others' achievement and accomplishment helps them feel closer to "standard" and is addicting in it's own right, as is any action or drug that floods endorphins.
Maybe praise him more/more often for simple things like mowing the lawn, call him a strong man when he lifts something even if a ten year old could lift it too, I don't know. Leaping from a tree onto the back of a boar and stabbing it repeatedly in the neck with a sharpened stone is a helluva drug, very hard to find something both as exciting and rewarding.
