Acid rain is only bad for structures. It's good for most plants, many of which do well with lower pH. If pH gets too low some plants get out of their comfort zone and poisons such as aluminum ions can come into solution. Adding acid directly is bad, but this is going to be so diffuse it won't matter. Soil also tends to have a buffering capacity that makes it trend towards neutral. So chances are this is just going to gobble up some buffering capacity and that's it. It will fizz away some lime, basically. There are blueberry farmers that wish a trainload of acidifier would fix their pH. But it takes a lots and lots and lots of material. Impossible amounts.

I'd think if the gas should only be inhaled at 1ppm per 8 hour shift that a little hydrochloric acid would be an improvement. Do you want something that is directly toxic or a little bit of a Ph adjustment?

Fish may not like it if the Ph goes to far. Plants may temporally dislike it if its super out of wack. But humans are going to be way better off with that.

Concern troll wants to turn his fear mongering into views. In fact what didn't burn is probably going to fuck with their water supply way worse. If there is still reason for concern, which is likely, it's not his HCl issue.

His focus is off a bit on the dangers.

One of the things released by burning is Phosgene. Seriously deadly gas used during WW1. Symptoms take time to appear after exposure (in high exposure it still takes around 12-24 hours).

We will likely see MASS amounts of lung cancer from the downwind areas assuming it is carcinogenic (no solid info in either direction). Obviously it is bad enough nearby to kill livestock (I've seen quite a few stories on this), so the exposure is fairly high.

The fish dying is probably from the pH like you stated as they are very sensitive to pH levels, but it needs to be investigated. If the ground water becomes contaminated, the entire area is fucked. You can't burn it out of the water.

This is a pretty serious disaster though and it is absolutely getting swept under the rug.

Either way I would move.

Yep. But the Phosgene and other plastic byproducts are the real health danger. He just needs to get his two cents in for views, and trying to find some angle others aren't covering. They aren't covering HCl because the volatile plastic gasses are a bigger deal.
