I've been playing Dead island with a friend lately, so any games like that are of interest (zombie survival). Didn't really like l4d2, in advance.
We're looking for co-op games. Roguelites are one of my favs.
RTSs are nice. I think we got aoe2 working before, since that was made back when LAN was the way to go. I'd like some turn based strategy like gears tactics.
Have you tried Project Zomboid? Not very graphic, but kinda in zombie survival direction. Can't recommend warzone 2100, cause you had to grow up with that game to like it. It's open source rts. But i mention that anyway :) Rise of nations is also classic rts(played this with a friend long time ago for quite some time). Haven't tried Sins Of Solar Empire in lan, although that can work. Warcraft 3 is also classic. Co-op... Terraria works(played with my wife some years ago). Also Stardew Valley, kinda gay if you play with your friend. Edit: Viscera Cleanup. By definition it's co-op, don't judge. There are actually some good(sh) games even on hotseat(need controller for second player): Wizard Of Legend, Cuphead, The Escapists 2, Castle Crashers, Overcooked 2, Tooth and Tail, Kingdom Two Crowns and then some. You need booze for most of them and some of them are just quickies.
What's the deal with hamachi? When I went to use it before it made it sound like it was a demo, and to use that someone has to be paying fees for the networking. Is this service somehow unlimited?
Nothing cracked in the last twenty years is playable online using the game's master servers. Not many in the same timeframe utilize proper LAN, either.
There are a handful of cases where a community manages to emulate the master server or otherwise change host, but they're few and far between.

Your answer has to do with how online play is handled.
If it needs to authenticate with some fancy server run by the company... Probably not working.
If it just needs to authenticate a login hosted by a third party... Chances just got better.
Release notes usually tell whether multiplayer works half the time they are lying.
Lazy untalented hackers these days compared to the drive of the originals..
