I had a fox terrier when I was young. Living on a farm with a corn crib. Lots of rats. the dog was bit by a rat when he was a pup, he hated rats. It would have come natural to him, but this dog had an intense hatred of rats. I would ask him if he wanted to go rat hunting and he would whine and spin in circles. I would lift up pieces of tin or wood exposing the nest. He had developed a technique that allowed him to kill more. Instead of concentrating on one rat and throwing it into the air, or shaking it. He would scoop up one rat and chew on it while persuing another. When he got close to the second rat he would spit out the first one. That dog was amazingly agile and fast. Once he had maimed all the rats in the nest he would go back and finish them off at his liesure. I have hunted Moose, deer, rabbit and grouse. My rat hunting adventures as a boy with that dog remain with me as the best hunting I ever did.
