They ripped off a Jack L Chalker scifi novel series called Wonderland Gambit. Fun fact: A planned movie adaptation of this series was cancelled because it so closely resembled the Matrix films. The Chalker books were actually published several years prior to the first Matrix release.
I'm not saying she wasn't lying, but both film series seem like they cribbed a lot of their finer points from classic and modern sci fi. It's a case of "if we rob a bit from everyone, no one can accuse us of stealing the whole of their work."
Edit: I just recalled a well known example for Terminator. Remember the plot point of humans using dogs to detect the presence of disguised terminators? A totally original, non-stolen idea, right? In reality, it was so close to a 1964 episode of The Outer Limits called "Soldier" that its writer (((Harlan Ellison))) sued the Terminator producers to have his name in the movie credits. They had told him tough shit, because in his own story regarding a future soldier flung back in time, who uses an animal companion to warn him of the presence of enemies from his own timeline, he used a cat.
Just this very poorly sourced Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_L._Chalker#Novels There's not a lot of references to the guy. When the movie came out, first thing my scifi nerd buddy said was "this is just Wonderland Gambit."
Dark city is based on the Alex Proyas novel and predates the Matrix tranny subversion flick. The Matrix even use some of the same sets from Dark City at Fox Studios Sydney ffs.
You are a massive homo.
The Matrix is lazy jewish plagiarism and there are several sites dedicated to a scene-by-scene breakdown.
Dark City: 6 August 1998 (Australian Release); February 27, 1998 (United States)
Matrix: 8 April 1999 (Australian Release); March 31, 1999 (USA Release)
The Matrix is popular for one reason only: The ground breaking visuals.
The story is dumb. The characters are only lightly fleshed out, if at all, and their motivations are paper thin. The dialogue services the story well, it along with pacing are the other highlights of the film.
We all know this to be true because the subsequent films are not well regarded. They have their moments -- well I don't know about the 3rd one because I literally don't recall a second of the film -- but the crappy story and characters introduced in the first film clearly could not carry the later films and since the visuals were no longer ground breaking the films fell flat.
The Wachowski's have some talent but the first Matrix film was where whatever genius they have as film makers was used up. I enjoyed the heck out of Speed Racer but it's an inconsequential film. Cloud Atlas gets the nod for breadth of storytelling, some very well done sections, and for casting Jim Broadbent, but as a whole it's rather muddled. The rest of their output has been forgettable.
It was based on a sort story by Plato about some men in a cave who discover their entire world was a fake meant to keep them from discovering the real world.
