Fucking linux desktop

Trying to get rid of shitdows for the nth time.

Imaged my windoze to VM and another disk just to be safe.

Installed Artix community edition. After reboot it won't boot. Stupid grub keeps trying to use wrong NVME. Found a fix grub command. Now panels keep resetting every restart, display scaling is total shit, arranging displays looks like that old windows bug where the windows tile all over the screen, random things don't work, printer won't work, sound keeps resetting to the wrong output every restart. Dumped it.

Installed devuan because everything works with debian. LiveCD couldn't find my network card. Plugged in a usb ethernet that worked, thought it would install drivers. Didn't install shit. Now I'm running some shit fuzzy resolution on a 4k monitor trying to figure out how to install AMD driver and dumped it. Fuck that.

Try void for 2nd time. New hardware. With previous PC it wouldn't work with my sound card. Forgot these fuckers make you manual partition. Figure it out watching some dude on youtube. Looking really nice. But I can't get many programs to work and scaling is shit and something else made me dump it.

Go for PCLinux. Yay, a WIZARD. I fucking love wizards and do not like manual partitioning in a terminal tool. Press next a few times, stuck on Please wait for 30 minutes. Dump it.

Gentooo lets goooo. Wait wtf their livecd is a fucking terminal and I have to reference a guide to get this motherfucker installed. Dumped it.

Do research. Apparently kde plasma isn't absolute shit at scaling. Install artix plasma as I've gotten furthest with this OS toward a usable system. Half the repos now won't update. Some key mismatch shit. Can't get the apps I want. Spend 2 hours finally find some copy paste about fixing keychains in pacman and reinitializing the fucker. Well now it fucking works like it should have out of the box. What shit is this that so much trouble is necessary to pacman? Got yay to work with arch aur. Installed most of the stuff I want. Now the problem is the fucking printer. I installed it through the control panel and selected the correct driver but it still not working.

I'm afraid I may not have the strength to persevere through this printer installation task.

You are trying to suck 100 cocks at the same time. You are trying to play on hard mode when you've never even sucked a single cock ever.

Here's what you do. Just install plain ol' Ubuntu. Don't try anything fancy, like dual booting or anything like that. Just try the one simplest thing you can do just to get it working.

OK, purity standards don't count for shit if you can't actually do anything. So, take a deep breath, reset the game, start again on easy mode, which is Ubuntu, and just use that for a few months until you can figure out how to Linux.

And when you have an idea of what you are doing, THEN you can try installing "L33t H4x0r Linux".

Trust me. Ubuntu is probably "just going to work" and it's OK to use it as training wheels.

I have attained victory over the dreaded printer. I had to add it as IPP printer in CUPS. Then I edited the printer in KDE System Settings and altered its address to point to the local IP rather than whatever local shit CUPS set. Now it works. Everything works now. I AM INVINCIBLE!!

I've ran linux as main OS for months. I also ssh into servers quite often. There's no point in running a systemdick OS if I can run windows. So far everything works except this printer. I will defeat this printer.

Devuan is debian without systemdick so presumably I will have the same issue with my hardware. I run debian VMs for things like Adguard Home but I don't want a systemdick OS for my desktop.

I don't think it's worth fighting systemd. At the end of the day, it's an init layer and low level service layer. It does it's job, and I almost never think about it. When I have to use it, I look up what commands to run on the Net and move on with life.

systemd is modern, logical, modular, and after Apple copied a version of it years ago for all Apple OSes, systemd is now in almost EVERY MAJOR current linux and unix operating system

systemd is awesome, and people shilling against it are all long gone luddites and had not one valid technical criticism

Kubuntu with Plasma is nice to get up and running quick then add the latte dock

Give Pop!_OS a try. After years of being monumentally underwhelmed by DEs this is a DE that's actually worth switching for. Once in a while I'll hit my head against some dumb Gnome legacy bullshit but nothing has been anything worse than a minor inconvenience so far.

Printers are gonna be a crap shoot under linux regardless. Getting my HP MFP working was the hardest part by a long shot but over time it's settled down and now I can print and scan without issues, PDFs excepted. I can dual-boot to Windows if I need to but have only done it 6 times in the 1 1/2 years since switching.

Honestly I would install Mint and cycle through desktops. You can install each from a package and see what works for you.

You could do that from a LiveUSB if you don't want to actually install debian.

Use it to figure out what desktop works and then figure out how to make that desktop work on the distro you like. Copy the config files and shit.

I ran mint years ago during one of my previous switch attempts. I lasted 4 month with it before rolling back my windows install. That's before I knew about systemdick. Now that I know my options are limited to autistic fringe oses.
