Manuals are easier to repair, and maintain, but harder to drive. Automatic is more difficult to maintain, and more expensive to repair, but easier to drive.
Automatics are faster than manual.
Usually automatics take quite a bit more transmission fluid because of the torque converter, and the fluid tends to be more expensive than manual transmission fluid.
With a manual, you'll only need 3 to 4 quarts of fluid maximum, meanwhile most automatics can take 7-8 quarts because of the torque converter which works via fluid coupling. Then you often have to replace the filter, and reseal the pan.
Meanwhile a manual transmission has a drain bolt and a fill bolt, only thing you have to replace besides the fluid is a pair of crush washers.
Rebuilding a manual is also much easier, you only have synchros, gear sets, and bearings to worry about. Automatics have bands, clutch packs, planetary gear sets, servo motors, and the valve body to worry about.
CVTs aren't obnoxious if you have enough time in the vehicle where the computers understand your driving style. Manuals will always be "the driver's choice" because you're actively thinking when to shift. Not sure I've had an automatic that wasn't CVT.
