Man, I tell ya, I've been having the HARDEST time finding a job at my level. I keep getting rejected by boomer fucking losers and it really is infuriating. I have 20 years experience in tech and these fuckers tell me, "you don't have enough management experience." meanwhile their resume is 15 years as literal help desk from 1985-2000 and they have a communications degree and have done nothing else.
Or just straight out of jr college in 1990 working the same job for 30 years literally making it to director of IT yet NEVER doing any actual IT work themsleves EVER!!!!! NOT ONE GOD DAMN TIME. And they tell me I don't have experience to work under them, meanwhile they literally don't know the difference between firewall and router and the possibility that they can both be the same device.
It is insane and demoralizing to witness firsthand how boomers hold the reins of power while also being completely incompetent at the same time.
Let's just say I got denied from some DIPSHIT who went to college for ONE fucking year 1994-1995 for undergrad... started as an auditor, went to retail territory manager(1997), to IT Manager to director of IT.... And tells doesn't even call me back AT ALL... I have a PMP, az-900/sc-900 azure certs, CISSP, TOGAF, ITIL on their way and going to start an MBA in Cyber in October ... Not good enough to even talk to about a it manager job..
I've applied to probabably 500+ I don't even know 1000+ jobs since July 2022... It's really bad out there guys.
Yeah i gave up like 9 years ago. Finished masters in absolutely different topic(production engineering), then did phd on biofuels. Even taught some courses on those topics in a university. Then left and back to void. I'm absolutely unemployable, cause most of my life i just learned and researched(i have worked here and there, but again, cnc is not it). What i have found out is that people usually can know something very specific about their job and that's how they are "smart" about it. Try talking peripherally, it's an abyss i just stare with despair. But they have teslas, man. And they travel and shit. And then i ask about some technical thing about their car or ask some question about the history where they traveled and again... it's an abyss. Nowadays i'm "self-employed". Very grey. Fuck everyone.
Lol when I worked in dc there were “software engineers” who did cobol in like the 70s who were getting paid gs13 salary. They also were grandfathered in where they got 80 percent of their salary for retirement or some shit and got to double dip. One of them literally just showed up and put his head on his desk.
Why not offer your services as an independent consultant? Working for someone else is lame anyway. I mean I do it but only because they approached me and dump buckets of money on me.
It's hard to get clients. Pretty much harder than getting a regular job and clients drop you so fast. I was an MSP for a while, I lost a client because I literally walked into the server room and the internet went down. I was just checking out stuff and the ceo said I was respsible, called my boss and they dropped me.
Usually when I interview I think, wow that went great we got along and everything and then a few days later I get:
I want to let you know that the team has selected the candidates for the next rounds of interviews. There has been a very strong applicant pool, including you, which made choosing the finalists difficult.
W
While you did very well in the interviews, we’ve decide to move on with a different set of candidates who have the edge on experience and qualifications that more closely align with our requirements.
Then I see who they actually get to fill the role and they are completely dogshit experience wise or the role never gets filled. It's very confusing and weird.
I tend to hire those who have knowledge, or show they actively seek it out. The problem is employers don't like shelling out money for a position and that's costing businesses a lot more in lost opportunity costs.
We (not my department) low balled on one applicant for a niche position almost two years ago and have not found anyone suitable since, and have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars outsourcing to a local firm to hire a team of people to try to do what this one guy did do already.
Breaking the culture is difficult, I think the best bet is finding smaller shops, between 25-100 employees, there you have hope to find decent people and have enough room to make the place your own.
Great advice. Recruiters literally get hundreds of resumes for every job posting and can't sift through each one. If you don't get past the algorithm scanning your resume, you will not get any response. Also, pepper your resume with esg keywords.
Yeah I'm going to get a career coach, although I've had 4 tech recruiters, one state recruiter and a few other hr people say my resume looks great. My old boss even rewrote my intro for me...
Working from home is a path to killing the beast. It is on our side. It allows the pumping in of billions of woke capital dollars into conservative communities where this woke capital has little control. We really should embrace it.
I don't know, man. I have CISSP, Juniper, Cisco networking certs, Sec+ and have worked with multi-factor and identity management tools, get by with Linux and any Win-doze OS, Good understanding of OSI stack, sub-netting, etc. there seems to be some gigs out there still, but I am a front-line support monkey, not a manager (nor do I want to be). I can tell you that the past several gigs I have had, 75% of the new hires have little foundational skills with OS, networking, virtualization, ports, protocols, etc. Takes YEARS to build that foundation, lots of dead-weight out there
I've worked in a lot of tech shops, 95% of the reasons I was hired had virtually nothing to do with coding. Most of it was some semblance of he looks handsome, or in some cases we need a fall White guy to hide our mess ups (Indians do this when one of their own screws something up). Heck, you can be hired as a coder in most companies and never touch a computer, and just shuffle between meetings and you will most likely never get fired. Meanwhile the guy putting in 60 hours a week will get let go because he's not a "team player" or some crap

I would love for our entire floor to quit or go on strike. The people above would be so lost and give up.

Spouse got a raise and title after using it, friend doubled salary, another friend got 50% plus and title.
Gotta get around the algos.
