OK, I have talked to him more and gotten more info on exactly what happened.

He says that the girl told him that she had an alcoholic single mother who died of alcoholism and she was placed in a state run orphanage, but that she spent most of the time at the mall because she was abused at the orphanage and she had access to better food, arcade games, etc. at the mall. They encountered each other because she was begging him for money to buy warm clothes, saying she was very cold, and also she had run out of money to play games at the arcade. She then begged him to adopt her since she thought a foreigner would treat her better than adults in Russia treated her. He eventually got sick of her bothering him and wanted to punish her for that, but was also getting really turned on by the way she was dressed and felt an urge to have sex with her, and concluded this would be the one time in his life he would probably ever be able to rape a kid and get away with it since nobody cared about this girl or what happened to her. So he took advantage of the opportunity and did what he did.

He also says he assumes that the girl is most likely dead now. Russia in the 90s/00s was in a severe social crisis with very high rates of homicide, suicide and many of other things among the entire population so you can only imagine how vulnerable someone in her situation would be. She likely died many years ago and there is no way to prove what he did, he never knew her name and her likely death may never even been recorded because she was seen as so worthless by society. But besides that, given the current geopolitical situation with Russia the USA is obviously not going to extradite someone to Russia for crimes committed there even if it could somehow be proven.

But he swears he has never raped anyone else, child or adult, and he would have seen both the legal risks and moral implications as too great in any other instance. He took advantage of this opportunity because this girl was so hopeless anyway that he wouldn't feel too bad about doing what he did. I'm still conflicted over whether I can trust him.
