I thought that his world building and character development were good. "Carrie", "Salem's Lot", "The Green Mile", "The Langoliers", "The Lawnmower Man", "The Long Walk", etc. were all good.

Reading "The Dark Tower" series and "The Stand" got me through some long periods.

Frankly "The Fog" got me thinking about things like the Large Hadron Collider and being glad that it's in Europe. We could nuke that part of France and Switzerland, if we had to, and nobody would really miss it.
