I'll always remember my grandmother told me her first memory of a big event in her life was when the Wright brothers made this flight, she was born in 1896 and was 7 years old when this happened.... she lived to 103

Fun Facts: that aircraft actually flew several months before that flight. What you're actually looking at is the first take off under its own power.

Here in Dayton the brothers had a problem. First it was getting anyone to build the engine. Casting the block in a single piece was said not doable. Once they had an engine it didn't produce enough power to lift the device off the ground. They then build a rail rig and a catapult like device. They would start the engine, fling themselves down the rail and thus generate enough lift. It was seen flying over Dayton numerous times. But it couldn't lift off under its own power

So, the went to Kitty Hawk. Because at the beach you had two things. Relatively soft sand to crash into. And a steady head wind coming in. Which would do the job of providing the extra lift they needed for a self propelled lift off.

That's what's actually in that photo.

Dad use to take us fishing out there by the fields while we were stationed at WP.

More significant, and more real, than landing on the moon, yet hardly ever mentioned.

You should check out the video of the first flight. Maybe 40 people stand around watching. And no one bats and eye. Its weird.

The skies were full long before the wright bros.

800 foot long rigid air ships (blimps) were around since the 1850s.

Agreed. Watched the footage in another video for other reasons and you can see the toy prop part clearly. The other scenes where everyone's gathered round and NOBODY is watching. 1 head should at least be pivoting as the first plane is flying by.

Less than 70 years later Nazis , uh I mean NASA put a man on the moon. Pretty big accomplishment for Naz , I mean the USA.

Psyop. Flight was actually invented by Alberto Santos Dumont. He's discredited because he wanted everybody to have a flying vehicle thinking that would end war because people would not want to bomb people that they'd had dinner with.

That frog never built an airplane that actually flew until after 1908.
