Totally misleading headline. "Police say a man died after he dove headfirst from a 40-foot embankment into a part of a Texas lake that was only around 4 feet deep."
I saw something similar happen in my youth, but the kid survived.
There was one popular hangout location on our lake only accessible by boat. The water was about 110ft deep, give or take 10 depending on how wet or dry the year was. On one of the shores here was a cliff that was at least 25ft above the waterline. Under the water, the cliff had a small shelf jutting out, but otherwise it was a sheer drop all the way to the lakebed. If you took the rope from the tree cliffside out, there was no coming back; you had to let go on the first swing out to clear the shelf. If you jumped, you had to jump good and strong. One newcomer took the rope out and chickened- the one thing you couldn't do, especially on a drier year like it was; the shelf was only several feet under the water line and the drop to it higher. He eventually lost his grip and fell. It was pretty bad.
The TVA wound up cutting that clifftop tree down. Many cool diving spots were either modified or closed off to the public after. One idiot to ruin it for everyone.
