Some of you know I drive an old truck with 300k miles on it and that I’ve been happy with it overall. I also have another truck on non-op that I was keeping in case this one goes down. I was considering retiring the current high mileage truck and slapping a lift kit and paint job on the other one and rolling like that for a few more years. Then it dawned on me that every one of my employees drives a newer car/truck that I, and also, I probably look like a Mexican farm worker to the cops in my old truck. I was trying to go the conservative route and just not spend a bunch of money on something I don’t really need. But, as I look around me and realize I’m driving old junk, that I truthfully am feeling a little insecure in, in that I’m wishing not to break down on the side of the road, I decided it’s time. I’ll keep this truck for ten years at least. The current two are 18 and 22 years old.
Keep driving your "old junk" and get them serviced and maintained as well as you can. They are far more valuable than you think. I have two cars, 19 and 23 years old, and I will NEVER get rid of them.
If you buy a new car or truck, get used to everything you do being recorded and reported. There is an incredible amount of information-aware electronics on new vehicles that should make think twice about this.
I needed to rent a 9' van yesterday. It was a new model with 200 miles on it. I needed help starting it up (you know, keyless entry), and then when I was driving it, I saw it had optical recognition of traffic signs. Every time I passed a speed limit sign, the speed limit was immediately displayed on the dashboard, and every time I slightly exceeded it, the icon would begin to flash.
I'm certain that it has forward and backward cameras that record everything on the road that corresponds with my driving and response to traffic conditions.
I only drove that deep state vehicle for 19 miles, just long enough to complete what I wanted to do (move some furniture to someplace a little bit away from me), and I returned that fucker as quickly as I could.
It drove any thought of my every buying a new vehicle out of my mind forever. If you value your privacy, you'll continue to drive old vehicles, like I do.
Your whole speel here was a part I left out of mine. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Based on that I’ve been maintaining these trucks for just that reason. I’m just tired of the junk. Seats broken down. Failed paint. One has dents. They both need tires. One needs brakes. I’m just tired and old. I’m still moving forward on this, and I may keep the trucks, I have plenty of room. However, I could always pick up something older down the road too.
Change the seats over the weekend. Sand blast the old paint, rub OSPHO on any rust spots, and fill in the dents. Getting fresh new color is only 200 bucks or so if you know how to shop around. Buy tires online for cheap and have a tire center install them for 70 bucks or so. Brakes are fun to replace and takes a couple hours. Rockauto dot com is your friend. If you know how to find and buy all your parts from the same location/distributor on that site, the shipping is not bad.
I’m way past working on shit. I run a retail business as well as a small ranch. I have no time for this crap, plus I’m too old. Say, I have a whole rollaway chest of tools I don’t use. Air tools, two compressors, sand blaster, bead blast cabinet, tons of carpentry tools. Seriously, I have more money than time at this point.
I completely understand that. I'm the same way. I'd love to own a truck, but I just don't have it in me to go through the stress and expense of buying one. A new truck is out of the question, and used trucks are ridiculously overpriced.
I have two older Japanese cars, built in 2000 and 2004, and I'm fortunate that they don't need any heavy maintenance at this point (right now they just need new brake pads). At this point in my life, I don't drive them much and I expect to get a lot of use out of them.
Learn how to disable the spyware. At some point, the cost of maintaining old vehicles gets very expensive, and you're stuck driving around a rust bucket waiting for the next expensive repair.
At no time do the occasional repairs to an old car exceed the expense of having a new car. And that goes double if you can't actually afford to buy the new car and have to get a loan for it because then you have to have much higher insurance and much higher insurance costs.
You're a real problem is your trucks are not old enough.
What you should do is go buy a nice restored vehicle from 1980 or 1990.
it would have less spyware.
it would look good.
You would stand out much more than you would if you just go buy a normal plastic filled new car that will reason stumble as it's plastic hoses developed micro holes and it's overly active smog control systems defeat the purpose of having a good engine.
Buy one here. This site only sells nicely restored old cars
I probably look like a Mexican farm worker to the cops in my old truck.
You don't, because you're not a fucking beaner. Not sure what the culture there is like now and, when I lived in your area, the spics would always do some stupid shit to bean out their ride, whether it was small tires, pinstripes or those ridiculous dingle-balls on the interior.
Not having some giant fucking stupid mexican eagle decal covering up the entire back window probably helps too.
as I look around me and realize I’m driving old junk, that I truthfully am feeling a little insecure in, in that I’m wishing not to break down on the side of the road, I decided it’s time.
I get it. Before I married, I had a nice little coupe that hauled ass. Even though she was far from being a spring chicken, I had taken good care of her and she had aged well.
I kept my eyes open and saw that the Fast and Furious wiggers in my area had just started to rice them out. Not many and not as nice as the one I drove. Truly just one every here and there.
It was a rich man's ricer and that was enough for me to see the writing on the wall. I decided that it was a young man's car and gave it to my kid brother, who needed it more than I did and happened to be a lot younger.
Bringing it back from the tangent, I understand what it's like to feel like the common perceptions about your preferred vehicle have changed out from underneath you as time has gone by.
Gauran-motherfucking-teed that CHP isn't going to mistake you for a wetback because you won't be driving drunk or trying to finger bang your 12 year old niece while driving it.
To each his own, but I will never buy a new vehicle, even if I had a brazillion dollars. There are a lot of reasons. Tracking. Data mining. Remote kill switch. Digitally signed parts only the dealer can activate. The list goes on. I also wouldn't buy a used vehicle from the last 20 years for varying degrees of the above.
Fuck trying to keep up with the times because the times suck donkey balls, old vehicles that are well-maintained are more impressive than the new debt-holes with overly bright stab-you-in-the-eye LED headlights and infotainment systems that can be hacked from a basement thousands of miles away and kill you.
It's a section 179 write off anyways. Surprised you're not taking that free money already. However you'll be pretty shocked at how expensive these new trucks are.
My company, (my company) is paying for it and insuring it. If I was wage earning still, I’d be hesitant, maybe deterred from the 65k out the door number. But in reality, my first new purchase in 2001, one of the trucks I still have, was 31k out the door.
Still its nice to get 5-600miles of range in a tank. I was thoroughly impressed by this. My HD work trucks with a similar tank needed filled up a lot more often
Pickup. I thought about used, but I know I’ll keep it for so long that it won’t matter in the end and there’s certain things I want and those things aren’t really found in current trucks, new or used. Engine/gear ratio combo. And, I like the extra cab rather than the full four door.
I don’t use any poisons. I use bait boxes. I don’t even get mice in my hot tub, and mice love hot tubs. Nothing in my garage where my modern tractor is. Nothing happens to my trucks or my quads which are stored in another building. Seriously, I’ve been here nine years and have no rodents eating wiring. I’m in nor cal, surrounded by row crops and orchards within a hundred feet in three directions. My own small plot out back is just flat dirt I keep disked. In all honesty, the farmland around me is not mine, but the proximity is the same as if it were. I have five acres, they have hundreds and hundreds.
were introduced to the U.S. by Henry Ford for the sole purpose of producing plastics for cars, so this is not something new. I had a friend with a corvette, circa 2000 that got chewed up by mice. I never heard of ford using this crap. Hopefully not in the trucks and just in the crappy cars.
Keep in mind that auto insurance rates are supposed to go up by 50% next year so if you've got some old vehicles without a loan on them and you're not required to get collision I think twice before I got a new vehicle thinking you know what the insurance is going to cost you.

You could get something within the last five years used for around $40k if you want to avoid the brand new prices.
