Nobody has a "fast" metabolism or a "slow" metabolism. They just suck at math. If $ENERGY_IN > $ENERGY_USED, then they're gonna get fat. If $ENERGY_IN < $ENERGY_USED, they lose weight. Simple as.

In fact I can feed two identical twins the same calories, give em pills for their metabolism and one will gain weight and one will lose. At same calories and same exercise.
Of course if I changed the calories I can have both lose or gain again, but at vastly different caloric intake.

Just saw the headline on a story today, but it was about some study that found that the reason people with more right wing views tended to be in better shape than more left wing people was primarily down to their sense of personal responsibility, which holds true with what you’re saying. I remember seeing something else a while back that said that although left wing people favoured more authoritarian interventions by government in relation to environmental matters they were significantly less likely to take any environmental action themselves on a personal level - again speaks to the notion of just taking personal responsibility for things. A lot of the differences between left and right really seem to just boil down to that difference in outlook.
