Brits do this as well. It's a nicety. It tends to make it sound as if you are inviting conversation and including your conversation partner in the dialogue, rather than just talking at them. It doesn't turn a sentence into a proper question, but into something more like a suggestion. It's rhetorical, and it also softens the edge when you are disagreeing with someone.

"Nice day, isn't it?"

"Well, it's a little bit cloudy, now isn't it."

"Sure is, but no shocker for the month of April, is it?"

"No I guess it isn't. Well, where are you off to, then?"

While there is logic in what you're saying, I'd prefer the edge of disagreement to be sharp enough for them to get the point? The nicety makes them sound wishy-washy and unsure of how the world around them works?

My pitch peaks on 'hot', then after the comma it remains at the same pitch, or drops a bit. I don't believe I'd converse with someone who speaks in rhetorical niceties, because IMO it makes their sentences sound valueless.

Now in this case, my pitch does rise as it nears the question mark, because I'm literally coming from a place of ignorance. However, if I'm being sarcastic or rhetorical, my pitch would drop to indicate I'm not actually seeking information I already have, that they should have too.

One more from their list of linguistic peculiarities. We have bikers who are called such because they tend to be 'fairly masculine', you could say... Australians have bikies, who apparently wear yoga pants and cute tops? Any idea why they feminize motorcycle gang members?

If they were truly serious about making renewable energy viable, they would be pushing storage as much as they would generation.

They came close when they suggested to use EV's as ad hoc storage, but the additional strain from that would degrade the batteries' useful life, raising the cost for the consumer beyond what was already ridiculous (or, perhaps that is the objective: to shift the liability burden to the property owner (and in the process, encourage them to give up personal vehicle ownership, too.))
