I have a new hobby: Wardriving around my neighborhood looking for open connections to bluetooth speakers. I connect and blast based music and try to listen to screams of frustration.

There are a lot of sheep in my area and this can provide good entertainment. So far I have been playing things like Fake Woke, Try That In a Small Town and Rich Men North of Richmond. Anyone have other suggestions?

huh, I'm surprised that you can buy that as a commercial product. I would have thought the FCC would have come down on that hard. The Bluetooth bandwidth is only leased for public use at very low power ratings. I thought you would have to DIY this type of set up.

Hypothetically of course, you can also do this fairly easily with a Raspberry Pi, a BT module, and a 5w signal amplifier module. This would give you a 1-5 mile range... but only for half-duplex connections. You can amp up your signal and send it over long distances but none of the back haul data will get back to you because the other device does not have the same signal power. This means that you have to be close to the device to pair to it, and any bluetooth profile that supports two way data will be problematic. One way data transfer, like say a bluetooth speaker hypothetically would allow you to stream music from a great distance away. This would allow you to drive around to find devices and to pair to them, and then you could go back home and stream audio to those devices... but this would definitely be a violation of FCC regulations.
