I don't really drink so yeah that would be in line with what we spend. I don't actually do the shopping but my wife generally sticks to Aldi and Walmart. Then again I do have to go to a regular market occasionally if there's anything she can't get at Aldi. I thought northern Cal was much more expensive than southern so I guess that shows what I know about California.

Southern California vs Northern, north is cheaper. Overall Cali is more than the rest of the country other than probable the upper east coast, but I’ve never been to the east coast. I was in northern Arizona two years ago and was shocked that eating out was at least a third less, maybe half of California restaurants, up north wher I am.

Obama care has been dropping people to cheaper "plans" that don't cover as much as the ones they are used to. Now if you were dropped you can go to the affordable healthcare website and choose a plan that fits you starting at $10 a month. (that commercial is running non stop. I have it memorized by now)

I went from "needing" to make 80k a year by myself to only needing around 25k while growing a family. It took years to reach this point, but it's an extreme change that took many steps and dedication to safely transition to this lifestyle.

If this person started cutting down on the smoking, cutting out most of the media consumption, reducing the eating out/uber eats, finding a cheaper place to live if possible(or get a sane roommate) it would go quite a ways towards getting them back on track financially.

Might not be entirely enjoyable but there is still potential. It's only going to get harder though. So this person needs to get ahead of this financial issue before it really starts spiraling.
