When I was poor, I lived in a flop house where there was NO cooking in the room. NONE! I had a cheap electric plug into the wall wok my mom had given me. I'd wander over to safeway, look at the sale veggies and rip 2 pieces of celery off the bunch, grab a carrot, and anything else on sale, and stir fry it with only soy sauce, for dinner.

Of note, the 2 things I didn't cheap out on. I always bought generic beer or whatever was cheapest, and butter. Those were and are, my weaknesses. If shrimp, beef, pork or chicken or whatever else was on sale, I'd buy enough only for that night. Some nights I'd eat a lot of protien, some nights: none. Meals that way are both cheap, fresh, tasty and healthy. You likely can live all week if you do it that way with the Subway dollars. Healthier as well. Choices.

Well, formerly could. McDonalds 1970 prices, minimum wage was $1.25/hour:

Hamburger =.15/cents
Fries = .12/Cents
Coke = .10/cents

How's that "Fight for $15" treating you?
