There's a word for this kind of emotional manipulation. Maybe it's psychopathy/narcissistic psychopathy? Like psychopaths don't actually feel anything, but they recognize the power of feigned emotion, so they use it to influence people's decisions and actions.

But I was having a conversation with people who believed they were rational and presenting the pro-abortion stance. They argued (with muh studies to back it up) that presenting access to abortion helps to reduce poverty. Naturally I responded, "Idk, 'kill the poors to reduce poverty' is a pretty tough sell..." They came back "I can't tell if you're being serious... that's not what we're saying at all." So I replied, "Oh I must have misunderstood - please correct my statement" to which they replied: <sputtering noises>

They just sugarcoat it. Dress it up in fancy clothes and disguised language, but once you lay bare the situation they're describing, they don't know how to handle it. At best, they'll say something like "abortion isn't killing" which, of course it is, it's just killing at a point where you don't feel as guilty about it. Which is, of course, a slippery slope that leads to killing the elderly, invalid, and homeless and will ultimately lead to killing because "I lost my job" or "I didn't make the sale I really wanted to."

Oh but the poor and stupid billions everywhere else have to move to our countries and have a shit ton of kids.
