She was getting frustrated with the state of the site and broke away to do other things. The last time I spoke with her, she hadn't regretted spending less time here. It seems like she decided to commit more fully to the hiatus. I did the same thing, for quite a while. I pop back in here pretty infrequently, and when I do these days, I rarely even sign in to the site. Something always keeps us coming back, but habits change. Helena has an enthusiasm about her. She takes the things we talk about here seriously; unfortunately this site doesn't reward that. The only way to get along is not to take things seriously. I think she was feeling stifled due to wanting serious discussion as well as some optimism and community-building, while she was finding that her attempts were as successful as holding an abstinence seminar in a frat house.

I think the concept of online community amounts to wishful thinking. I got over the idea of real, remote connections a long time ago. It's analogous to a long distance relationship; at best, the other members of the site are just projections of your own stereotypes, unless they surprise you sufficiently to become difficult to predict. Community happens in the real world. The main deterrent for me nowadays is the sense of frivolity, for example, when I think about how the front page looks and reads the same as it did seven years ago. I see the same memes. The same "boy, I oughttas". Once you recognize this is just a place for pressure release, then you glance through to catch the headlines, maybe check the Voat consensus quickly, and then move on with your day. I'm not saying I like any of this, I'm just describing how it seems.
