Can you tell me what happened with this cop?

About 130am years ago in south jersey I had been drinking and I bought a 40 oz and drove home. I was almost home and I got pulled over. He said he had to bring me in for an unpaid ticket in another city.

He did not mention the 40 or whether I had been drinking. It was just me at the station with him. Some little back road police station. I was not read my rights or fingerprinted but he cuffed me to a bench and set a date for me to go to New Brunswick and pay this ticket.

I had been pulled over plenty of times between the time of that ticket and the time of this weird half arrest. After he set me up with the court he let me go and just dropped me right back off at my car

He didn't read you your rights because he wasn't asking any questions. You had a warrant over the unpaid ticket and he saw that when he ran your plate. If the 40 wasn't opened they're less likely to care.

Why wasn't I arrested? What is it called the process I was put through?

You were arrested, he cuffed you. You weren't charged for the bottle though, I assume it wasn't opened. That's called a book & release. He documented you were told to go to court, and if you don't that'll be another arrest.

Like someone else had mentioned, a Miranda warning (being read your rights) only applies if the cop is going to ask you questions that he'll use against you in court.

Under the law, you are only required to be read your rights at the initial hearing in front of the judge, where you might say or do something that will be used against you in that court.

Sometimes cops are nice, sometimes they're assholes, sometimes you're just lucky. There's no accounting for some of the bullshit. Thats my view. I got pulled over for speeding when my daughter was like 4 years old. I was lucky she was there. Cop sticks his head in the window "do you know why I pulled you over sir?" I nod my head yes, and the little angel in her car seat in the back pipes up "Is daddy going to jail?"

Cops looks at me, grins, says "can you slow down sir?". I nod and say "absolutely". Lets me go, not even a warning ticket.

Yeah I think I told him I had never been arrested and he somehow kept it off my record and it was basically just like a little hangout.

The cop treated you as if you turned yourself in. He could have arrested you or you could turn yourself in.
