"If it doesn't need fixing, let's break it." - Microsoft Board of Directors

Windows 7 was and still is my favorite.

XP was mine. 7 seems good in hindsight, but only was accepted at the time because they forced everyone off of XP and Vista was trash.

Vista was much better a couple of years into it's release. Despite the insane system requirements for it's time and it's many problems initially, it went on to become one of my favorite versions of windows. I preferred it over 7.

Meanwhile nobody loves 8.

7 eased up on the requirements a fair bit, IIRC. Had an old laptop that came with XP when it was new, the little "upgrade advisor" flat out said Vista wouldn't work. Period.

Then 7 comes along, installs just fine, and I used it for years on that laptop.

NT 4.0 was my go to for years until XP came along for work. At home it was Windows 3.11 until Windows 98SE came out...and then to XP. I never used 95 at work or at home.

Is that still pretty functional today? Can it still surf the web, and crunch spreadsheets?

[ - ] aleleopathic 3 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 14:35:15 ago (+3/-0)

It is functional, but their 'killshot' to 7 was around driver signing. Basically, there is a Win7 update that requires all drivers to be signed (if you are clever, you will prevent its installation during the 'rollups'), and then all of the keys are extremely out of date, so it will lock everything out by default.

Also, it requires a bit of knowledge of what you are doing, as you need to force it to run drivers designed for newer windows versions, which it naturally doesn't like.

It was worth it to me to figure it out. I hated 8 and 10, and forgot 11 even existed. Basically went right from 7 to linux.

My dad still uses a machine that runs Windows 7, and I have a rather dated laptop that also runs Windows 7 (the processor is a crappy Celeron).

The idea is to force a subscription-based online-only operating system. All your data are belong to us.
(they do have market share and the other two currently suck more)

Say that's a nice business you have there. Wouldn't want to lose it would you? Do you want to keep using your computer? Try our new flexible DEI pricing program to see if you qualify to not be ass raped. It might be free depending on your skin tone and what social media content you ooze onto the internet.

Nice collection of bit-coin you got there as well. Good thing our operating system breaks encryption and VPN by automatically logging keystrokes. Poof it's gone. Musta been Russian hackers. Better use a better lock next time.

Email your doctor about cancer? Insurance might want to know. Are you a successful day trader? That's all ours as well. Your client list and pricing might be valuable for third party associates. Nothing about you is private anymore.

Before you can access Office365 for a client, you'll have to watch these commercials which fit your customer profile .db.

There's multiple free office packages with Linux.

[ - ] iSnark 1 point 1 yearMay 2, 2024 14:15:51 ago (+1/-0)

LibreOffice & OpenOffice to name two!

[ - ] x0x7 3 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 16:38:24 ago (+3/-0)

Onlyoffice is really the one we should be recommending to windows people. It's a 1:1 office clone. Everything 95% of users use doesn't just work similarly. It works identically.

Unless you are some freak who uses document templates with databases to do mass mailings you are never going to know you aren't in office.

I would agree with that, I've actually had both installed simultaneously in Linux and switched between them. Pity that Open Office isn't more active and more regularly updated.

Another casualty of Oracle and their jewish machinations.

[ - ] TheNoticing 5 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 14:06:55 ago (+5/-0)

Joke's on them, I switched to Linux.

[ - ] FuckShitJesus 2 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 14:18:45 ago (+2/-0)

Jokes on you, retard, enjoy your SystemD backdoor.

[ - ] aleleopathic 1 point 1 yearMay 2, 2024 15:18:53 ago (+1/-0)

You can get linux without jew poettering's backdoors.

[ - ] iSnark 1 point 1 yearMay 2, 2024 16:53:46 ago (+1/-0)

Win7 master race checking in

[ - ] iSnark 4 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 10:20:41 ago (+4/-0)

Sucks that windoze strong-arms corporations into using their crap products! If you go to work for a company, you more likely than not have to use Microcrap products! Isn't that called "Market Manipulation" and "Coercion" when the small business owner tries to do that?

You gotta get those government contracts and sell your soul to a jew before you get above the law.

Windows 10 was what convinced me to finally switch to Linux. Windows 11 made me thankful for doing so.

[ - ] RabbiKinderschtupper 3 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 14:34:49 ago (+3/-0)

Windows 11 is worse than Windows 10. I'm not even mad. That's amazing.

[ - ] 4thTurning 2 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 14:26:32 ago (+2/-0)

I got Windows 11 and it gets corrupted and stops working about once per week

It's the shittiest operating system I've ever tried and I started on Dos.

[ - ] UncleDoug 2 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 11:21:09 ago (+2/-0)

The fact is Windows keeps getting worse with every iteration. Ok, there`s certain improvements for newer hardware, but they come along with spying, AI crap, bloatware, ads and other intrusive practices. Yes, people will say Win11 is better if Win13 adds subscription fees.

Best comment.

I've been saying this exact thing at work for four years now.

[ - ] 2plus2equals5 0 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 15:01:24 ago (+0/-0)

Every time it "gets corrupted", you will have to re-connect to the internet to report back to mother ship?

(go CMD as admin and sfc /scannow)

[ - ] 4thTurning 0 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 15:37:02 ago (+0/-0)

CMD literally refuses to open.

I have to do local backup restoration every time

[ - ] Doglegwarrior 1 point 1 yearMay 2, 2024 13:51:19 ago (+1/-0)

I'm so tired of my computer trying to trick me into windows 11.

Every fucking time I'm like no fuck off

[ - ] RobertJHarsh 0 points 1 yearMay 2, 2024 19:43:24 ago (+0/-0)

Turn off the TPM chip. Windows 11 won't allow the upgrade. You shouldn't be using TPM anyway. M$ and Intel are behind it and they can download what's in it whenever they want.
