For context, Ovid was a Roman writer, not a Greek writer, who lived several hundred years after Hesiod, the original writer of Medusa's story. Thus, the Ovid version of the story should actually use the Roman gods. Your story is that Neptune (Roman equivalent to Poseidon) raped Medusa and Minerva (Roman equivalent to Athena) punished Medusa for this instead of punishing Neptune.

It's important to contextualize this story, as Ovid was a writer who had problems with authority and was exiled from the Roman Empire. His mythological poetry is generally understood as a form of political critique towards authority figures, represented by the gods. That's why in a lot of Ovid's retelling of pre-existing myths (such as this one) the Gods are depicted as being massive assholes towards mortals, often including elements of rape that weren't previously there.

The correct version, the Hesiod tale, is that Medusa was a follower of Athena and as part of her vows to the goddess was to remain a virgin. She was so beautiful that Poseidon seduced her and she had willing relations with him inside the temple of Athena. As such, Athena punished her not only for breaking her vows but also for directly insulting Athena by having relations in the temple.
