Academic vs everyone else

submitted by SmallGuyFromBrooklyn to Rants 11 monthsMay 17, 2024 13:07:24 ago (+2/-0)     (Rants)

They are pretty smart, but the academics tend to live in their own world where they assume everyone else is just like them. I was working with one and sure, what they were saying was great academically and in theory. The problem became more apparent when you need to transform the theoretical into practice. Academics tend to add boxes and buttons randomly on a screen, and they expect the user to just know what the button does, or what it's for. And when you tell them their idea is retarded, they look at you like some peon piece of shit for not going along with their delusional ideals. Heck, sometimes the idea isn't even physically or practically possible, it works as an extension of another system, but on its own, it simply cant work without heavy review.

A great example, I was working on a piece of code. The academic wanted me to just add a button to add bounding boxes to a picture. I told him that doing so adds UI complexity which needs to be accounted for. He looked at me in disgust, as if such a basic task was beneath him. Of course, when it came time to implement, sure enough, we ran into problems getting the UI right. The reason was simple ... because what he was asking for was a collection of multiple screens, ui changes, and pretty much would require rebuilding the entire component.

At least they can sleep soundly knowing its someone else's problem to fix, not theirs

Sounds like the same issues in Manufacturing with Engineers.
Welders, Machinists, Mechanics. We know how to weld, machine and assemble, repair anything on the shop floor. Then come the engineers, design shit and it's easy to weld, machine and assemble on their computer screen. But not as easy in the real world, and they complain why things take so long and are so expensive.

My theory is that everything these days is run in isolation, its all based on singular people working on a singular item with zero clue how the big picture works. The end result is shitty, half baked, broken shit

Hiding shit under arcane symbols "everyone knows" is a trend started in academia and needs to fucking die.

A great example at work, I have a machine learning engineer. The guy just gave me an absurd task that is physically impossible to do. He wants me to add an auto bound box system that can detect features, BUT i cant use a machine learning algorithm. Apparently, "python does it, so why cant Y". He doesn't understand that python has hundreds of machine learning libs that dont exist in the world of not python code. So he thinks throwing a bunch of schrodinger's bounding boxes on the UI is totally NOT gonna confuse the user. He STILL doesnt get why what he's asking for isn't gonna happen. So when we ask him more questions, he cant fucking answer them, because he himself doesnt know WHY it works a certain way, only that hitting f5 on Jypiter notebooks "works" so why dooesnt it work on a c++ environment amirite, niggas?

These fuckers learn by rote not by intellect or experience.

So he thinks throwing a bunch of schrodinger's bounding boxes on the UI is totally NOT gonna confuse the user.

And the user, who has no idea what's going on under the hood, is either going to develop a passed-down "don't touch that" or "you have to press it 3 times, wait 10 seconds, say chicken, then press it twice, then..."

And the user wont even know what a bounding box is hence why no one who does UIs for ML even bothers to show them. This is why OpenAI had people manually tag shit in background, because expecting users to do your work for you is the height of arrogant bullshit ive come to expect from academia

Charge him another $100K and do it.
