From California to Texas to New Hampshire, calls for state secession have made headlines recently, sparking debates over whether states have a right to secede. We asked over 35,000 U.S. adults to tell us their views on secession.

A tiny, tiny fraction of people would support violent secession and only a tiny, tiny fraction of those people would do anything violent.

For example California had said no fireworks for July 4th during lockdowns.

And what happened? People ignored it.

That's all you have to do.

You can also obtain and exercise official levers of power, but it is not necessary.

No. The law is the law no matter how many people believe it's not the law.

There was no law, so people doing it anyway was perfectly legal. One city or another could try to illegally impose an ordinance against the people, but the city runs the chance of getting sued or made to look stupid when they couldn't enforce such nonsense against a number of people.

If everyone in CA believed it could secede, the USG would start arresting people for sedition and potentially treason. And they'd get convictions.

States CAN legally secede from the union. It's absolutely legal, and the country's very existence is based on the fact that the colonies asserted their legal right to secede from the British Empire. It's not a matter of whether they can legally secede, it's a matter of whether they would be allowed to secede without violent interference from the federal government.

No. States can NOT legally secede from the union, and the Supreme Court has said so more than once.

Our country exists because our forefathers used justifications based on violations of recognized rights and an inability to get remedy to break the law and secede from the crown. Leaving the crown was absolutely illegal.

I'm not an expert on the subject but I believe this is true for all states with the exception of maybe Texas due to the wording used when they joined the union.
