After the invasion of Okinawa in World War II the Navy ships that left the troops on the shore went back to their bases through a gigantic hurricane and encountered waves like that. Some ships were crushed by the waves and broke in half and were lost.
A reminder that the structure of that ship has to support the complete weight of the portion of the ship that is out of water while it's probably fully loaded with cargo. So that ship has to be a gigantic bridge when only the stern is in the water and the bowel is way up in the air like that pulling down on the whole ship before it lands back in the water between the waves. Imagine the stresses on the metal in that ship.
I remember the night when the Fitzgerald went down, fucking wind sounded like a freight train, Lake Superior had 50ft waves out on open water and in the bays 30ft...Montreal River Harbor had average 30fters...the size of waves are determined from a point on the granite slopes, the heaviest sea I've experienced in Superior was 15ft and was in my 21ft Starcraft, one wave put my boat almost vertical and water breaking over the front windshield, had to keep the fucking motor from stalling in the backwash but not so much throttle that it cause the bow to ram the next wave, fucking fresh water waves are more dangerous than salt water because of the lack of buoyancy...I've fished 15ft rollers out on the Atlantic and Pacific and could do it all day but with fresh water there's more chop and curl to the waves...but the water action here is suicide shit

Interesting point. Add that the froth in the water makes the water even less bouyant.
