I usually defend my bases with cacti as it stops zombies and skellies.

Been using pyracantha (also known as, "Firethorn" and for good reason) as hedges around the borders of the property for years now. It looks nice but it's nature's own concertina wire. Looks innocent enough, until you touch it. Thorns have an irritant. And the birds love the berries.
I grow it around the outside of the fence line, so that, just to get to the fence, you have to get through the pyracantha first.
So, if you're inside the fenceline, there ain't no way in hell you just sorta wandered in there by accident, so we've already got a problem.

That stuff is no joke.

birds love the berries.

Funny to watch when they've become intoxicated. I've seen them stagger around and fly full-speed straight into windows.
