I think there is a better word than fake. The word fake implies the proponents and believers in these things are con-men intentionally deceiving people.

But a better word is "histrionic". These people buy into some goofy claptrap be it crystals, climate or pandemics and feel they need to save the world by acting out.
Histrionics are in control of the media, and much of politics today.
