The Walmart Self-Checkout

A comical exchange I just read:

I was at Walmart yesterday, self-scanning and bagging my almost $300 worth of groceries while an employee monitors my activities from her "podium". And then this happened...

Her - Why are you double-bagging all of your groceries?

Me - Excuse me?

Her - You are wasting our bags!

Me - If you don't like the way I'm bagging the groceries, feel free to come on over here and bag them yourself.

Her - That's not my job!

Me - Okay, then I will bag my groceries how I please if that's alright with you.

Her - Why are you using two bags?

Me - Because the bags are weak, and I don't want the handles to break or the bottoms to rip out.

Her - Well, that's because you are putting too much stuff in the bag. If you took half of that stuff out and put it in a different bag, then you wouldn't need to double bag.

(10 seconds of me just staring at her)

Me - So you want me to split these items in half and put half of them in a different bag so that I don't have to double bag.

Her - Exactly.

Me - So I would still be using two bags to hold the same number of items.

Her - No, because you wouldn't be double-bagging.

(Me pressing two fingers to my left eye in an attempt to make it stop twitching.)

Me - Okay. So here I have a jug of milk and a bottle of juice double bagged. If I take the milk out and remove the double bagging and just put the milk in the single bag and the juice in that single bag, I'm still using two bags for these two items.

Her - No, because you are not double-bagging them so it's not the same number of bags.

(Me looking around at about 10 other customers who at this point are enjoying the show.)

Me - Is this like that Common Core math stuff I keep hearing about?

Her - Never mind. You just don't get it.

And with that she went back to her little podium so she could continue texting or playing games on her phone or whatever it was she was doing before she decided to come over and critique my bagging skills.

It's better than waiting in a line of 10 waiting on Reshunda or Tyrone who is taking their sweet time. Not to mention the boomer trying to use an expired coupon and having to wait for the manager. Self checkout is why I prefer walmart.

No. Both of those things are lame. Don't get me wrong, in a perfect world those 12 checkout lanes would all be staffed with nice white people. People working jobs and no lines, great. I'd choose that over self checkout. But those days are long done. These days you get 2 lanes if you're lucky and they are staffed by slow diversity hires. I will take self checkout over that any day.

During the plandemic they decided to have two lanes open for a entire store like walmart. Of course 90% of the workers were missing. And then there was the 6 foot rule. Everyone was obedient and huite. The lines stretched all the way to the back of the store and the two cashiers were working at full speed like a herd of turtles. The lines were not moving. It would be an hour or more minimum to get to the car.

I took my full cart with hundreds of dollars worth to the front, announced loudly "FUCK THIS" in front of everybody standing there, and walked out.

I Was at a grocery store with a cart full of groceries. the grocery store said they were open until 12 midnight. in actual fact they closed all the person man cash registers about five minutes after I came in.

so as I approached all the registers and noticed they were all closed and I was going to have to hand scan all those items in my cart because apparently they were trying to save money on personnel I instead very visibly walked up to the front with my cart load full of things tell somebody I wasn't going to scan them all so somebody was going to have to return them all and oh by the way they're a couple hundred dollars worth of steaks and some ice cream that'll be ruined if you don't do it quickly. needless to say they did not save money on personnel that day.

I went to one of the ones near me a few weeks ago (didn't end up buying anything of course because fuck walmart) and it seems they've closed the self check-out. I live in one of the biggest diverse shit-holes in canaderp, so I'll let you put two-and-two together for why they closed those.

A few years ago I stopped at the little gas station closest to my home. I would stop some mornings on my way to work for a Mt Dew from the machine outside. They were $1 out of the machine.
One day the machine outside was out of Mt dew so I went in. Went to the back and grabbed one and set it on the counter. The smart alleck jerk that owned the place said, that'll be $1.25.
I asked why they were more inside than from the machine outside? This jerk didn't even answer. He said "do you want it or not?"
So I walked away. As I got to the door the asshole yelled at me. "GET BACK HERE AND PUT THAT DRINK BACK UP!"
I smiled and said, "it's worth a quarter to you, You put it back up"

Then I went a mile and a half down the road to the next gas station and got my Mt Dew.
